Ian Gibson

I grew up in Leicester, England, spent 14 years in a small town in the Bavarian Alps, and finally settled in the US at the age of 33, first in Boulder, Colorado and then in Portland in 1997.

While I've ridden bikes continuously since I was a kid, aside from a couple of time trials and a few mountain bike events, I didn't really get into racing until I was in my mid-fifties. In my first year of racing I found that I could not only hang on to a fast-moving bunch, but also that I had a half-decent sprint. I began to win some of the local mid-week races as well as do well in some longer road events.

I've been with Dialed since its inception back in 2017. I race mainly road, but I've also done a fair amount of gravel events. I'm an active member of the team as well as the broader Portland /Vancouver cycling community. For the past five years I've organized the team's annual showcase event - the Michael Myers Memorial Time Trial, as well as the Barton Park Road Race.

Now in my mid sixties, I'm still pretty competitive. Every Monday or Tuesday throughout the summer, you can find me lining up with the 1/2/3 field at PIR, as well as taking part in all the local road races, criteriums, and gravel races.

I'm also a USAC certified cycling coach and have been helping athletes meet their performance goals though my coaching business - "Dialed Performance Coaching".

A few questions for Ian

What is your favorite race or ride, and why?

The most fun race I ever did was Steamboat GRVL a few years ago. I also went to the Masters Road Race National Champs in Albuquerque which was a great experience. I have been to the Baker City Cycling Classic five times and that is always a fun challenge. Currently my favorite ride to do is the weekly 'Sauvie Shootout' ride out of Portland. Fast, challenging, and a great bunch of people.

What rides and races are on your bucket list?

I was lucky enough to recently tick off a bunch of my bucket list rides when I went to the French Alps: L'Alpe du Huez, Galibier, Croix du fer, and others. Still to do is Hautacam and the Tourmalet in the Pyrenees, as well as Mt Ventoux. I'm also hoping to get back to Road Nationals here in the States before I get too old!
